Organization: Drive Change Fellowship
Title: Culinary Operations Associate
Nominated by: Nicholas Stanton, Chief Program Officer

Dupree joined the DriveChange Family right after he was on parole as part of our very first inaugural cohort, he quickly became a cornerstone of our team here. More then just his title, his deep institutional knowledge and authentic approach make him a prime example of transformation, embodying the change our program aims to achieve. Dupree went from a fellow to overseeing kitchen operations, and that is just the start of his truly transformation. Being a former participant is often a source of knowledge and inspiration, with real-life insights into the challenges and solutions within our programming, it puts him closer not only to the problems but also to the solutions. He is a bridge between current fellows and the program’s objectives at large. But what truly sets Dupree apart is his real drive for change both personal and professional. Dupree openly acknowledges his areas for improvement he actively seeks training and resources. This self-aware approach highlights his journey to personal growth, but also serves as an inspiration. Dupree’s journey is a testament to the notion that one need not be flawless to affect meaningful change. However, be willing to continually strive for excellence. His story is one of real-life impact, that being close to the problem helps us to be equally close to the solution.

Every day at Drive Change can look different. However true, Dupree’s days at Drive Change are truly a whirlwind of culinary action and heartfelt mentorship. His typical will begin with the day’s deliveries, ensuring everything from our spices to our staples are stored just right, setting the stage/table for seamless kitchen operations! He will then put together the family meal plan.  He’s not just following recipes he’s found online but he’s crafting experiences, encouraging fellows to dive hands-on into the culinary world and expose them to new tastes and flavor profiles. Dupree is in constant motion: from tweaking inventory systems, to conducting spot checks for cleanliness, (and updating the logs) and keeping the gears of the kitchen running without a hitch. It’s not all about keeping things tidy either, Dupree is a mentor at heart. He takes every opportunity to engage with each and every fellows, turning every task or ask, whether it’s slicing veggies or sanitizing surfaces, into a real teachable moment. He’s the go-to guy when equipment acts up or when a health code question pops up, handling challenges with his easygoing humor. By the time the kitchen closes, Dupree has not only ensured that operations flowed smoothly but also that each fellow steps out a bit more skilled and confident than they walked in. It’s this blend of operational excellence and personal commitment that makes Dupree a standout member of the Drive Change team.

Dupree’s contributions continue to raise up both the spirit and efficacy of our foodservice job training food distribution initiatives. A former fellow himself, he spearheaded the development of a new family meal program that both honed culinary abilities but also fostered community, thus boosting participant retention by 20%. His efforts led to us leaving big box vendors and forming relationships with local BIPOC vendors, expanding resources and reducing operational costs by 10% while investing back into the community we serve using black farmers. Dupree’s personal dedication as a mentor has profoundly impacted over 45 graduates this year alone.

Dupree loves the idea of leveraging shared resources for communal benefit. Practically living in the resource library, he will consistently use and reference documents of Model Members. As his supervisor’s supervisor, I’m often reminded by him of best practices we have done “teach backs” on. He wholeheartedly runs with the idea of not reinventing the wheel, encouraging not only his peers but also leadership, including myself, to actively participate in sharing documents and resources.
